Ji Weon Ryu, Flutist

Admired for her “pure poetry” and “beautiful technique and sound” (NFA Chronicle), Ji Weon Ryu is one of the most versatile flutists of her generation. Appointed Principal Flute of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra by Carlos Miguel Prieto in 2019, she became the first Asian musician to join the orchestra’s wind section and has been featured extensively as a soloist, appearing in numerous concerto performances and recordings.

Prior to joining the LPO, Ms. Ryu served as Principal Flute of the Albany Symphony and has appeared frequently as a guest flutist with the New York Philharmonic. During the summer season, she currently serves as Principal Flute of the Britt Festival Orchestra, and has also performed with orchestras at the Chautauqua Music Festival, Verbier Festival, Tanglewood Music Center, Peninsula Music Festival, Seoul Arts Center Festival, and BBC Proms Korea.

An active soloist since making her debut at age twelve with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Ms. Ryu has performed with the Albany Symphony, Rapides Symphony, Seoul Chamber Orchestra, and Manhattan Chamber Players.  She won a top  prize in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition and was a quarterfinalist in the 2014 Geneva International Flute Competition.  Her recording of Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (arranged for octet), released by Delos Productions, was praised by American Record Guide for its “gorgeous, buoyant flute.” She also appeared as Principal Piccolo with the Verbier Festival Orchestra on a Deutsche Grammophon recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach.

Ms. Ryu previously served on the flute faculty at Louisiana State University and has given recitals and masterclasses at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, California State University Fullerton, and National University of Tainan.  She holds a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and both a Bachelor of Music and an Accelerated Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School.  Her principal teachers include Robert Langevin and Carol Wincenc.
