Claire Shackleton, Mezzo-Soprano

Claire Shackleton, mezzo-soprano, is passionate about performing early music, chamber and symphonic works.  Recent seasons have featured performances of Mahler and Monteverdi with the New Orleans Chamber Players, Vivaldi’s Gloria with the LPO, Haydn’s Schöpfungsmesse and Mozart’s Requiem with the Highlander Concert Series at the Dallas Moody Performance Hall, Bach’s Cantata BWV 170 Vergnügte Ruh and the premiere of Tucker Fuller’s The Book of Hours with New Resonance Orchestra, as well as Caldara’s solo cantata Medea in Corinto and Buxtehude’s Jesu Membra Nostra with Krewe de Voix, among others. In addition to her tenth season of concert appearances with Krewe de Voix, this season Claire looks forward to performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and New Orleans Opera Association singing Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and the role of Annina in Der Rosenkavalier.

Favorite operatic performances include Prince Charming in Cendrillon, Dorabella in Così fan Tutte,  Cherubino and Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro, Der Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos, Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Siébel in Faust, Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti, Jade Boucher in Dead Man Walking, and Maddelena in Rigoletto.  Operatic appearances have been made with Glimmerglass Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Hawaii Opera Theatre, New Orleans Opera Association, Austin Lyric Opera, Kentucky Opera, Ohio Light Opera, Opera in the Heights, Pine Mountain Music Festival, Santa Fe Concert Association, and Pacific Opera Project.

Currently based in her hometown of New Orleans, Ms. Shackleton is so happy to have joined the talented voice faculty of her alma mater, Loyola University New Orleans. In addition to voice instruction, she has enjoyed stage directing opera productions for Loyola, including  L’enfant et les Sortiléges and Dido and Aeneas.  After earning her Bachelor of Music degree from Loyola, Ms. Shackleton went on to earn her Master’s degree from the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati.
