Alan Tolbert, Trumpetist

Alan Douglas Tolbert of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania is the Acting Principal Trumpet of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra for the 2025-2026 season. Alan was the Acting Third/Utility Trumpet of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra from January 2025 to June 2025, and prior to that was a trumpet fellow at the New World Symphony Orchestra from September 2022 through December 2024. He received his Bachelor’s degree in trumpet performance from Temple University, where he studied with David Bilger, former Principal Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He also studied with Mr. Bilger at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he received his Artist Diploma.

Mr. Tolbert was a trumpet fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2019 and 2022. He was also recently employed by the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood for the 2024 and 2025 summer seasons as the Artist Assistant for the TMC. His previous orchestral endeavors include playing Second Trumpet in the York Symphony Orchestra in York, PA, as well as attending the Eastern Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival and School, the New York String Orchestra Seminar, and the Spoleto USA Festival.

Mr. Tolbert’s first trumpet teachers include Mark Wilson and Trever Famulare, and he was a member of the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra in high school. He enjoys exploring several fields of the music industry, including performing, teaching, and arts administration.
