Trio Appassionata, Ensemble-in-Residence

Praised by the International Record Review for its “complete dedication and assurance… [and for] music-making as impressive and dangerous as a granite cliff,” Trio Appassionata is known for its communicative and engaging performances and its ability to bring audiences from different cultures together through music.  The ensemble has toured Latin America, North America, Europe, and Asia.  Some of Trio Appassionata’s recent engagements include recitals on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts series in Chicago and on Piccolo Spoleto’s Spotlight Concert Series in Charleston.  The Trio also travelled to China and Brazil, performing at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, as well as in Brasília, Belo Horizonte, and São Paulo.

In 2013, Trio Appassionata joined the artist roster of Odradek Records, where it released its debut CD, “gone into night are all the eyes.”  The album features piano trios by American composers, and includes a work commissioned for the project by composer Thomas Kotcheff.  The Trio traveled to Italy, Spain, and the U.K. as part of its CD release tour, which culminated in a recital at the London Festival of American Music.  Since their Artist-in-Residence appointment at Chamber Music Sedona in 2012, the members of Trio Appassionata have curated interactive performances and designed programs that invite communities to explore their own relationship with music — presenting concerts in schools, retirement communities, and hospitals.  In addition, the Trio holds masterclasses for young solo and chamber musicians, connecting with the next generation of artists and audience members.

Coming from three distinct backgrounds (Brazil, Spain, and the U.S.), Trio Appassionata was formed in Baltimore at the Peabody Conservatory in 2007.  Apart from its international tours, the trio has performed extensively throughout North America at such venues as the Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, Bard College, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.
