Ji Weon Ryu, Flutist
Admired for her “Pure Poetry” (NFA Chronicle), Ji Weon Ryu was appointed Principal Flute of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra by Carlos Miguel Prieto in 2019, becoming the first Asian to join the orchestra’s wind section. She has also served as Principal Flute with the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Britt Festival Orchestra, and the Seoul Arts Center Festival Orchestra, and has performed at numerous international festivals including the Verbier Festival and the Tanglewood Music Center. A frequent performer with the New York Philharmonic, she has appeared with the Chautauqua, Princeton, and Syracuse Symphonies, and has been a soloist with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Seoul Chamber Orchestra, and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra on multiple occasions.
Ms. Ryu has performed extensively as a recitalist and chamber musician throughout the US and South Korea. She is a founding member of Frisson, an “explosive” New York City-based chamber ensemble, and was featured on NPR’s Performance Today. Currently, she is a co- founder and artistic committee of Ensemble Blank, a contemporary group that explores new sounds in unconventional venues. In the 2024-2025 season, she and the ensemble have been invited to perform at BBC Proms Korea.
Passionate about mentorship and coaching, she served on the flute faculty at Louisiana State University and has given masterclasses and clinics at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Berklee College of Music, Loyola University New Orleans, Louisiana Flute Society, Louisiana State University, Tulane University, and the University of Kansas. Her accolades include First Prize along with special prizes in the National Flute Association Soloist Competition, as well as First Prize in the New York Flute Club, Philadelphia Flute Society, and Arthur Balsam Duo Competitions. In Korea, she has received the Young Artist Award from the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation.
Ms. Ryu holds a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, as well as a Bachelor of Music degree and an Accelerated Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School.
