Jason Vieaux, Guitarist

Grammy-winner Jason Vieaux, “among the elite of today’s classical guitarists” (Gramophone), is the guitarist that goes beyond the Classical. His most recent solo album, Play, won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo.  Mr. Vieaux has performed as soloist with over 100 orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. Additional recent and future highlights include performances at the Caramoor Festival as Artist-in-Residence, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, the National Gallery of Art, San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre, Buenos Aires’ Teatro Colon, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, New York’s 92Y, the Ravinia Festival, Domaine Forget International Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, and many other distinguished series.

A first-rate chamber musician and programmer, he frequently collaborates with artists such as the Escher Quartet, harpist Yolanda Kondonassis, accordion/bandoneon virtuoso Julien Labro, and violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. His passion for new music has fostered premieres by Jonathan Leshnoff, Avner Dorman, Jeff Beal, Dan Visconti, David Ludwig, Vivian Fung, José Luis Merlin, Mark Mancina, and more. Mr. Vieaux’s latest CD release on Azica, Dance (with the Escher Quartet), includes works by Boccherini, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Aaron Jay Kernis. Later this season, he will release a new solo Bach album, also on Azica. Additional recordings include Jonathan Leshnoff’s Guitar Concerto with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra (Naxos); Jeff Beal’s “Six Sixteen” Guitar Concerto with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra(BIS); Infusion (Azica) with accordionist/bandoneonist Julien Labro; Ginastera’s Guitar Sonata, which is featured on Ginastera: One Hundred (Oberlin Music) produced by harpist Yolanda Kondonassis; and Together (Azica), a duo album with Kondonassis.

In 2012, the Jason Vieaux School of Classical Guitar was launched with ArtistWorks Inc., an interface that provides one-on-one online study with Vieaux for guitar students around the world. In 2011, Mr. Vieaux co-founded the guitar department at the Curtis Institute of Music, and in 2015 was invited to inaugurate the guitar program at the Eastern Music Festival. Vieaux has taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music since 1997, heading the guitar department since 2001.  He has received a Naumburg Foundation top prize, a Cleveland Institute of Music Distinguished Alumni Award, GFA International Guitar Competition FirstPrize, and a Salon di Virtuosi Career Grant.  His primary teachers were Jeremy Sparks and John Holmquist.  Mr. Vieaux was the first Classical musician to be featured on NPR’s “Tiny Desk” series.  He plays a 2013 Gernot Wagner guitar with Augustine strings.

Andrea Casarrubios, Composer-in-Residence

Praised by The New York Times for having “traversed the palette of emotions” with “gorgeous tone and an edge-of-seat intensity,” Spanish cellist and composer Andrea Casarrubios has played extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. First Prize winner of numerous international competitions and awards, Ms. Casarrubios has often appeared at Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Lincoln Center, the Piatigorsky International Cello Festival, and the Ravinia, Casals, and the Verbier Festivals.

Ms. Casarrubios’ recent album, Caminante, presents some of her own original music. Released on Odradek Records, it was chosen as one of the “Best 2019 Classical Music Albums” by Australia’s ABC Classic.  As a guest soloist at Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Ms. Casarrubios performed her own Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, MIRAGE (2019), among other works. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra recently performed the work’s U.S. premiere, and SEVEN (2020) for solo cello will be presented at Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium in October 2021. One of her latest works, Amid a Place of Stone (2020) for solo violin, commissioned by Emily Daggett Smith and funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation, is being featured throughout this Fall 2021 exhibit at the Albany Arts Museum.  Her compositions have been heard in 78 countries, presented by organizations such as Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Washington Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall, Sphinx Organization, Chicago’s WFMT, and the Spanish National Radio (RNE).

Her cello mentors have included Maria de Macedo, Lluis Claret, Amit Peled, Marcy Rosen, and Ralph Kirshbaum. As part of her Doctoral degree, she also studied composition with John Corigliano. A passionate mentor, Ms. Casarrubios has taught at the Juilliard School, the University of Southern California, the Eastman School of Music, Skidmore College, and the University of Kansas, as well as at numerous festivals and masterclasses on tour. Ms. Casarrubios’ latest engagements include concerts in Canada, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, and the U.S.A.
